Q&A with Hywel Jenkins

Hywel Jenkins is a very good friend of ours, but he is also an extremely talented and well versed photographer. A Cardiff native currently living in London where as well as photography he is Creative Director for a luxury boutique travel website. We have worked with Hywel on a number of projects for and outside of Esah. We wanted start our mew Q&A series with him, so here we are:

1. What does a typical day look like for you at the moment?

Repetitive, but I have tried to maintain a routine throughout lockdown that balances work, training and relaxing. I've been spending a lot of time scouting models through various social apps too.

2. Most used App?

Instagram. I'd say 80% of my Instagram usage is for work purposes though.

3. Current Netflix watch?

Gogglebox and anything David Attenborough

4. Go to garment/outfit whilst working?

I mostly shoot outdoors so a warm puffer coat is essential. Uniqlo & Stone Island are my go-to's.

5. How did you get into Photography?

I actually started by filming music videos for youtube when I was 16. I slowly started getting more and more into fashion and then began shooting street style at Fashion Week.

Imtayaz Qassim AW16 Campaign was the first shoot I had shot with a big agency model and I remember being really pleased with the outcome of that shoot. Shot in the beautiful Welsh landscape too!

7. Favourite photographers / websites?

I have so many photographers that inspire me; Andrew Jacobs, Charlotte Lapalus, Joe Perri, Jonathan Pryce - I could go on and on. I'm always browsing the beautiful hotels and homes on www.kobu.co too.

Leo x Esah

We recently headed down to one of our favourite local coastal spots to shoot our first editorial. The aim was to keep things really natural and free flowing, not a typical military precision and structured style of shoot. The Sun was high and the tide was out as we traipsed through the the bushes and down the enclosed stairway to the cove. We told our model Leo and photographer Nick to just have have fun and enjoy it.

We were really happy with the final images and hope that you like them too:
